What is the Purpose of a Nursing Cover?
19 years ago, we created the first rigid neckline Nursing Cover. Our patented design, changed breastfeeding for many, many moms.
This image is of me. This is the first photograph we used when we went to our first trade show market to show the world...or even just a few people what a Nursing Cover was.
We spent SO much time explaining just what a nursing cover is, because no one had ever seen anything like it before.
I couldn't go to the park without moms asking me where I got it, how much it cost and when they could get theirs.
We spent a lot of time trying to figure out the right size, the right fabric, the right neckline, the right functionality.
Since those days, there have been many, many copies. We are proud that we inspired many a mom to make or buy other versions.
Some might wonder, why do they 'need' a nursing cover? Well, the answer is very personal. It is not for anyone else to have an opinion about. It is a feeling for mom and mom alone.
My own need came from a personal feeling. I had breastfed my first daughter, who was born in England in the month of October, and I found that I could do so on most occasions quite comfortably without anyone even aware of it. Fast forward to baby number 2, in July, in California, in a soccer stadium, with 15,000 people, and I was not quite so comfortable. So, I looked unsuccessfully to find a solution.
I'm creative by nature, so I decided to make my own, even though I couldn't sew. A short period of trial and error led to the first Nursing Cover and I went out into the world with a new found confidence and freedom. And LOTS of moms wanted to know more.
Breastfeeding is literally the most natural and beautiful part of motherhood, but it can sometimes present challenges, especially when nursing in public. The same way that some people are confident public speakers, or have no trouble at a party where they don't know anyone, some people are naturally comfortable nursing in public - and those people are amazing - I wish I could feel the same way. When some magazine tells you to be confident in a bathing suit, does it make a difference? Maybe? but not for me. I have always said, that the most important thing is that baby is fed. It doesn't matter if that is breastfed, bottle fed, undercover, out in the open...I really don't care/ As long as mom is happy, baby is happy and fed, that is all that matters. I do not subscribe to judgment, in any way.
So, here are a few reasons that a Nursing Cover helps:
Privacy and Comfort
One of the primary purposes of a nursing cover is to provide privacy. Many mothers feel more comfortable breastfeeding in public when they have a cover to shield themselves and their baby from view. This added layer of privacy can make nursing a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. It allows mothers to feed their babies without worrying about exposing themselves, which can be a concern in crowded or public spaces.
Our rigid neckline allows for uninterrupted viewing of baby, which also creates the space for mom and baby to bond - the material is held away, so it is not draped over their face
Protection from Distractions
Babies can be easily distracted by their surroundings, especially in busy or noisy environments. A nursing cover helps create a calm, focused space for the baby to feed. By limiting visual distractions, the cover allows the baby to concentrate on nursing, which can lead to more efficient and peaceful feeding sessions.
Temperature Regulation
Nursing covers can also help regulate the temperature for both mother and baby. In cooler weather, a cover provides an extra layer of warmth, ensuring the baby stays comfortable. Conversely, in warmer climates, lightweight and breathable nursing covers can help protect the baby from direct sunlight while still allowing air circulation to keep both mother and child cool. Our muslin covers allow for the air to pass through, while offering a coverage where no anatomy can be seen - if you want that.
Versatility and Style
Nursing covers come in a variety of styles and fabrics, allowing moms to choose one that suits their personal taste and needs. Many covers are versatile and can be used as scarves, blankets, car seat covers, or stroller covers, making them a multi-functional accessory for mothers on the go. This versatility means that a nursing cover is not just limited to breastfeeding but can serve multiple purposes, providing added value.
Save money
Using a Nursing Cover means that you do not need to invest in specialty breastfeeding clothing, that often feature concealed holes for access to the breast. Simply, lift or pull down your top.
Another benefit is that the cover extends down and over the stomach area, so if you do not want to expose your midriff, there is no need. If that matters to YOU.
Confidence and Empowerment
For many mothers, a nursing cover can be a source of confidence and empowerment. It allows them to nurse their babies whenever and wherever needed without feeling self-conscious. This confidence can encourage more mothers to breastfeed in public, promoting the normalization of breastfeeding and supporting a healthier start for their babies.
A nursing cover is more than just a piece of fabric; it is a tool that provides privacy, comfort, and convenience for breastfeeding moms. By offering protection from distractions, regulating temperature, and adding versatility to everyday items, nursing covers empower mothers to confidently and comfortably nurse their babies in any setting.
Whether you're a new mom or an experienced one, a nursing cover can be a valuable addition to your breastfeeding journey, enhancing both you and your baby's experience.
